Life Style Sports Opening of Newly Refurbished Store

I know I haven’t been blogging much lately but last week I was invited along to the reopening of Life Style Sport’s refurbished store on the Headford Road in Galway and I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would do a post to tell you a bit about it. (I do some bite size posts on Twitter and Instagram if you want to see what I’m up to in between proper blog posts.)

Now I know that I have more active wear than I know what to do with and I am slowly but surely amassing a trainer collection to rival King Nidge, but I won’t let that stop me. Not that the signs are on me but I do go to the gym four evenings a week and in the summer, when it’s all bright and sunny (and only when it’s bright and sunny) I like to get out on a Saturday morning for a hike or a cycle. I have been known to take part in the occasional adventure race or 10k fun run. The thing is though, it doesn’t take much to stop me. Some days when I am running, I feel good, my mind wanders and the run is over before I realise it, but that’s not always the case; on those days I feel heavy and tight, everything seems to be aching, I keep telling myself that this or that is hurting and I can’t breathe and I want to slow down to a walk. As I said, it doesn’t take much to stop me so it’s important that my clothing is comfortable. I don’t want to be aware of my top twisting and turning, my bottoms falling down, or tags, seams or zips digging into my skin. So I buy a lot of active wear because I want to be comfortable but I also want it to look good as well. Huffy, puffy, red and sweaty is not a good look so I like to think cute active wear in bright colours and fun prints distracts from how bad I look as people only really see the clothes instead of my grossness. Hence my excitement at being invited to the reopening where I could shop alongside some of the stars of the Connacht Rugby team.

The newly refurbished Life Style store is broken down into four zones, of which the Women’s Studio was what I was most interested in; there is an extensive range of fashionable and functional sportswear and runners.

Trainer Central has all the latest trainers for men, women and kids. Trainers, runners, sneakers, whatever you like to call them are very fashionable for every day wear at the moment and there was a great choice on display weather you want them for running and training or just casual wear, I think I need another pair of Nike Theas.

The Run Club has just about everything you could need for any distance and they can also analyse your gait to make sure you get the proper running shoes.

The Boot Room upstairs is “what it says on the tin” and more. It has an astro turf caged testing zone to test out the boots before you buy them. It also has loads of football, GAA and Rugby jerseys.

A few Connacht players with a lucky competition winner!

I thoroughly enjoyed the event, browsing through all the new clothes and runners, while spotting the talent local sporting heroes. There was a Q & A with some of the Connacht Rugby players, a D.J. and loads of yummy food and beverages. There was loads more but this post is probably too long already. I was very restrained and only bought one pair of leggings to add to my collection but I have my eye on a few more items. Anything take your fancy there?

Karora Ultra Dark Bronzing Mousse

Is it just me that thinks this summer is absolutely flying by? It feels like I only just received this tan to try a few days ago but the reality is I’ve had it for a good few weeks now. With the weather being so blah, I’ve mostly just been using light gradual tans to add a bit of warmth to my skin and saving the darker tans for special occasions and big nights out. I like to use a tan a few times before I post a review of it so that is another reason it’s taken me so long to get to do this post. Sometimes the results you get from using the same tan at different times can vary due to the state your skin is in before application and the amount of time you have when applying it.

Karora Ultra Dark Bronzing Mousse

I’ve used the Karora Ultra Dark Bronzing Mousse (€29.99) a few times now and have found that each time it has developed evenly with no streaks or patches. It also fades evenly over the following week with gently exfoliation, leaving a clean slate for the next weekend. By gently exfoliation, I mean that I use a puff in the shower to gently buff my skin with a moisturising shower wash and I would use a good body moisturiser all over the day before the next application. It is labelled as extra dark, which might sound scary to some but I found that it developed into a natural looking tan. Considering how pale I am naturally, I do have to be careful with dark tans. Surprisingly I can carry off a dark tan but only if the result is just the right shade for me, it can’t be orange but it can’t be too olive either or I end up looking dirty. I think the Karora Ultra Dark Bronzing Mousse is the perfect match for me.

The mitt that I was sent along with this tan may be part of the reason application is so easy and the result is so even. I normally buy the cheapest of the cheapest mitts and bin them after a few goes but this mitt is velour, like a “Juicy” tracksuit velour. It feels so nice and its machine washable. I find that mitts often absorb / waste a lot of product so my tip is to pop on some rubber gloves, apply the tan in sections (i.e. from knee down to feet, then from knee up to top of leg, lower back, upper back and so on) with the rubber gloves and then put the mitt on over the gloves and buff that section gently with the mitt before you move on to the next section, so you don’t end up with streaks from the rubber gloves. It really doesn’t take that much longer, you get a better finish and you don’t waste as much product.

I really like this tan, I always find mousses a lot easier to work with, the guide colour helps me see if I’ve missed any bits, the developed colour is perfect for me, and it develops and fades evenly. I also have to say that I don’t think I will ever use a cheap mitt again. So while I was sent this for free, I would repurchase it and I will definitely try out some of Karora’s other tans.

Soap & Glory Butter Yourself Moisture Lotion

You may remember that I got this massive Soap & Glory set for Christmas. I had intended to space out the reviews of the products in it as much as possible so as not to bore you but this was love at first sniff. If you have been reading this little blog for a while then you will know that if I like the scent, then I am totally sold.

Soap & Glory Butter Yourself Moisture Lotion

Soap & Glory Butter Yourself Moisture Lotion is a whole lot more than just a pretty scent though. For starters the bottle is massive so this should last me ages. The pump is really handy, it makes application a whole lot easier when you don’t have to try and squeeze more out of a bottle when your hands are all greased up. The best thing is that the cream feels very rich and creamy when you are applying it, but it actually dries into the skin really quickly. So less time spent hopping up and down next to the radiator in the nip. I have to say I used this after the Sugar Scrub and my skin felt amazingly soft and smooth.

Soap & Glory Butter Yourself Moisture Lotion

Now for the scent. On the bottle it says “Fruitigo Fragrance with notes of frozen yuzu, orange oil, green fig, and jungle pomelo essence”. I have no idea what any of that is but it seems to be a winning combination. I’m guessing the scent is enhanced by the Shea butter, fig pulp extract, along with almond, mango and moringa oils. It reminds me of something but I can’t figure out what, yet. This fragrance also seems to last ages on my skin.

A 500ml bottle is €13.99, which I think is excellent value since I actually prefer this to some more expensive moisturisers. Have you tried this or any of the other Soap & Glory moisturisers?

Soap & Glory Git Set

I received this as a lovely surprise Christmas gift and I think it was a popular choice with both those who gave it and those who received it. There were a few of these Soap & Glory gift boxes under trees in both my family and the in-laws. Great minds think alike. The fact that it was one of the Boots star gifts reduced to half price for a week in the run up to Christmas made it excellent value considering it has 10 full size products. I also know a few ladies that bought it for themselves.

Soap & Glory Gift Set

Soap & Glory is a quirky brand with a bit of innuendo and the odd pun here and there. It’s popular because the products are really good and the price point is easy enough on the pocket. When my husband saw the email about the Boots star gift and knew there were a few Soap & Glory products hanging out in the bathroom he figured it would be a good gift and he was right. I am really looking forward to trying everything out; other than the Righteous Butter, I haven’t tried anything else that’s in this set before.

Did you get any great beauty gifts for Christmas?

Beverly Hill Perfect White Black

I know what you are thinking, what is there to say about toothpaste, you brush your teeth with it, the end. Bear with me here. The first time I heard about this toothpaste was over on Cherry Sue Doin’ the Do and it immediately caught my attention because with all the fabulous products that Sue gets to review if she is mentioning a toothpaste then it must be something special and what could be a better beauty accessory than a beautiful smile.
As someone who had very crooked teeth before two years of wearing good old fashioned train tracks braces in my late teens (none of your fancy invisible and removable braces in my day), I am now a bit obsessed with looking after my chompers and keeping them as white and clean as possible.

Beverly Hills Perfect White Black is a whitening toothpaste that is black in colour. Brushing my teeth with something black in the hopes that it’ll make them whiter may seem a bit odd but it actually makes sense. It contains active charcoal to both freshen breath and whiten teeth. I find that it definitely freshens breath instantly and I have noticed that after three weeks use my teeth are feeling cleaner and looking whiter.

(top before, bottom after)

I am really enjoying using this toothpaste and at about €2.50, it’s really good value considering some brands retail their normal toothpastes at around the fiver mark. Also it’s made in Ireland. Have you tried this yet?

I am writing this post on Sunday so let me set the scene; its cold, wet, wild and miserable outside. It was much the same yesterday. I am training for Westport’s Sea 2 Summit, which takes place in two weeks so yesterday was the last Saturday to do a full training session, from now on we taper to avoid injury. Yesterday my training group and I did the whole course. So I spent three hours out running, cycling, hiking, cycling and running in strong winds right on the west coast of Ireland. To say the wind smacked the face off of me is putting it very politely but hey, I did enough swearing yesterday. So as you might guess I am in no rush to leave the house today. With the clock going back an hour last night, it feels like I have loads of time to do some pampering and use all the products that I buy to treat myself and then never have the time to use.

Bliss and Dermalogica

Pantene Pro-v Strength and Shine 1 Minute Wonder Ampoules
First up is my favourite face mask combo, you can read about them here. I start with Dermalogica Multi Vitamin Power Recovery Mask because my face definitely needs it today. Then fill the bath with hot water and throw in a cup of Epson Salts. If you don’t have Epson Salts you really should get some, they are a wonder cure all; I can’t even begin to tell you all their uses. I use them in a hot bath when I am all achy. I also bath in them when I have a chesty cough. Supposedly they draw out toxins and impurities through your pores. Apparently models bath in Epson Salts before photo shoots to reduce water retention. While I have never got out of the bath feeling a dress size smaller, if I soak puffy feet in a basin with Epson Salts the swelling goes down. While in the bath I pop one of the Pantene Strength and Shine 1 Minute Wonder Ampoules in to bring back some shine to my locks. After a long soak, I use Caudalie Divine Oil to moisturise my skin and the gorgeous scent is the ultimate indulgence.

Caudalie Divine Oil

L'Oreal Revitalift Magic Blur Moisturiser and Laser Renew Serum
After the bath comes the second mask, Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energising Mask. I find using this after the Dermalogica one really brightens my complexion and softens my skin. After the two masks I treat my skin to doubling up on the usual amounts of Serum and Moisturiser, at the moment I am using L’Oreal Revitalift Laser Renew and Magic Blur.

On to hands to finish, I do my DIY heated manicure that I told you about in this post. I love doing this; it’s so nice to have warm hands for a change.
After all this I feel brand new. I am toying with the idea of heading out tonight because I am feeling like a million bucks and hopefully looking like it too.
What are your favourite home treatments?

I am heading away to the sun for 10 days and as much as I would like to pretend that I can pack lightly the truth is I want everything with me. I have tried to whittle it down as much as possible and pick up smaller sizes of the products I want to bring with me where possible. I don’t like to decant things into travel size bottles because (1) I don’t want to contaminate products I put on my face with any more germs and bacteria than I have probably already got in there and (2) we all know I would just make a mess. Let’s face it, even if there were all travel size I would probably still have too much to put in a zip lock bag, so it will need to go into my checked in bag anyway. I usually put all liquids and lotions in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the bag before I put them into toiletry bags. The plastic bags contain any leaks while the toiletry bags keep things together in a shape that is easier to squeeze in besides clothes and offers a little more cushioning and protection to prevent leaks. So here are the products:

Skin Care:
Cleanser: La Roche Posay Physiological Gel
Eye Cream: Olay Regenerist Luminous Dark Circle Correcting Swirl – this is the same bottle I told you about in this post, lasting ages so really good value
Serum: L’Oreal Revita Lift Laser Renew
Moisturiser: L’Oreal Revita Lift Magic Blur – this and the serum are new and I will tell you how I got on with them in a few weeks. I choose these because (1) they were on offer and (2) they are aimed at a slightly older age bracket but I figured this could help minimise the damage of spending so much time in the sun during the days and drinking most nights.

Hair and Body:
Shampoo and Conditioner: Pantene Youth Protect 7
Body wash and lotion: Body Shop Moringa Collection – I’ve had this little set for a while and forgot about it until I spotted it recently and figured it would be perfect for travelling.
Sun Cream: Piz Buin Tan & Protect Tan Intensifying Sun Lotion SPF 15 and SPF 6 I do actually tan but I always use my husband’s SPF 30 on my face and feet, you definitely don’t want sunburn on your feet.

Makeup – The Basics:
Primer: MAC Prep & Prime
Foundation: Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24 hour
Powder: MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural
Concealer: Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
Bronzer: MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural Medium Deep
Brows: MAC Omega
Blush: MAC Peaches

Makeup: Eyes
Mascara: L’Oreal 4D
Eyeliner: Kiko Sportproof in Metallic Taupe and Smashbox Limitless in Black Violet
Primers: Kiko Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadows in Rose Brown, Light Taupe and Golden Beige, these can be uses as primers and eye shadows on their own
Powder Eye shadows: MAC – Satin Taupe, Beluga, Fireside, Summer Haze and Twilight Falls
Highlighter: Nars Orgasm
So there you have, I know its loads but mostly essentials, really.
