It feels like it’s been a long time since I did a face of the day post and since I’ve made some changes in the products I use regularly I figured now is a good time to do an update. Since I’m doing this the day after a night out, I am trying to reduce the appearance of blotchiness and discolouration without packing on loads of slap. Here are the products used:
Max Factor Colour Correctors, yellow for under the eyes and green for redness on the tops of my cheeks and sides of my nose.
Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluid Foundation
Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural, setting powder
Isa Dora Face Sculptor in Warm Peach, contour, blush and highlight
MAC Omega eye shadow to fill in brows
Kiko Long Lasting Shadow Stick in Taupe as eye lid primer
Smashbox Full Exposure Palette (1. crease, 2. lid, 3. outer corner, 4 over liner and 5. inner corner)
Kiko Sport Proof Liner in Taupe
Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara
Max Factor Colour Elixir Gloss in Luxurious Berry
Do you use any of these products?
I have never done an empties post before, if its empty it goes in the bin. I don’t usually see the point in showing you a bunch of empty packages. However, I noticed that I have quite a few products right now that are either empty or really close to it. Since there are quite a few things on the last dregs at the same time, the question of whether or not to repurchase needs serious consideration. When you start using a products at first it’s all new and exciting and you wonder how you ever lived without this product and you will totally repurchase it over and over, however as time wears on and new similar products are released it ends up moving down deeper into the stash and by the time you actually finish it you could end up being a bit meh about it, maybe preferring to try new replacements. Then again some new products become firm favourites and you use them every day and end up repurchasing them over and over. So on to my empties:
First up is the Bobbi Brown Colour Corrector in Light Bisque. I have had this for ages despite the fact that I use it nearly every day. The thing is I don’t see any difference when I apply it over my dark lines under my eyes. Used under concealer those dark lines don’t show up in pictures and do appear concealed but I think the concealer alone gives much the same result. It is a lovely creamy formula that feels nice on the delicate under eye skin though. If I was to repurchase this I would try a different shade and get the sales assistant to apply it on me before I buy to make sure, but I’m in no rush, the Max Factor Colour Corrector pencil will be its replacement for now.
Next are two concealers; Nars Radiant Creamy concealer and Collection Lasting Perfection. I have been switching back and forth between them in an effort to make the Nars one last longer but what has ended up happening is that I am failing to see how the Nars at €27 is any better than the Collection one, which is a fiver. I have already repurchased a replacement Collection Lasting Perfection and the package seems to have been sexed up a bit so I hope the formula inside is the same. As for the Nars, maybe when I feel the need for a luxury purchase but for now I am happy with the Collection one. Before the Nars is completely gone I will do a post comparing the two and take pictures of before, after and at the end of the day to see if maybe it is worth €22 more.
Now on to two Foundations: MAC Mineralise Satinfinish and Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24 Hour. The MAC looks great when just applied but gets shiny on my oily skin as the day goes on so I won’t be picking this up again. I love the Lancôme but I have been using it for ages now and feel like a change but just don’t know what to try next.
MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural Powder, I have already repurchased this. It’s one of the items that I buy over and over again, I wouldn’t be without it. I still want the Make Up Forever Super Matte Loose Powder but I will always have a MAC Mineralise Skinfinish on hand.
MAC Paint Pot in Painterly, which I use as an eyelid primer. I will pick up another one of these as it’s the best primer for my oily lids but I’m in no rush because I have been using the Kiko Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadows as primers and they are working really well. As for the MAC Omega Eyeshadow, that is what I use to fill in my brows. It’s the perfect ash shade for me so I will be picking up a new one stat.
What products are on your repurchase list? What doesn’t make the cut?
I like reading face of the day posts but I hardly ever do them myself because I am a creature of habit and tend to wear more or less the same products most days. I have decided to make more of an effort to mix it up a bit now and then in order to get some more use out of all the other products that are sitting in my stash being ignored. Some of which are actually really great products but like I said it’s just habit that keeps me reaching for the old reliable. So here is today’s face of the day:
Foundation: Max Factor Whipped Cream Foundation
Setting Powder – MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural
Blush: Rimmel Lasting Finish Soft Colour Mono Blush in Live Pink
Concealer – Nars Radian Creamy Concealer
Eye shadow: Maybelline Big Eyes Eyeshadow Palette in Brown
Eyebrows: MAC Omega
Mascara: Max Factor Clump Defy Extensions
Lipstick: Clarins Joli Rouge Brilliant Perfect Shine Sheer Lipstick in Sweet Plum
Do you mix your makeup up regularly or are you a creature of habit like me?
Today’s look is just a soft face of the day that is easy. These type looks make me feel like I am polished and put together without being over the top. No fear of “where does your wan think she is going with all that slap”. Most days I don’t really bother with doing my eyes or lips but instead reserve the full face of makeup for nights out, but now and again at the weekends when I have a bit more time I like to do soft look on my eyes and maybe wear a tinted lip balm or gloss. Sounds like I am low maintenance, but we all know the truth.
To start I did a bit of prep work to create the illusion of a flawless base.
Max Factor CC Colour Corrector Pencil in green on some redness at the sides of my nose and on my chin
I also use the yellow CC pencil on the dark circles under my eyes and then applied some NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer over the areas where I used the Colour Corrector Pencils.
On my face:
I used a sample I had of Lancôme Miracle Air De Teint foundation in 010.
I set my foundation with MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural in light. I use the Mineralise Skinfinish Natural in Medium Deep to contour my cheeks and then used MAC Fleur Power Powder Blush.
For my eyes:
I always use MAC Omega to fill in my brows.
I used Max Factor in Feral Brown in the outer corners and blended it in to the crease
Then I applied Max Factor Auburn Envy on the lids
I then lined my eyes with Feral Brown and applied Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara to my lashes.
To finish I lined my lips with MAC Subculture and loaded on some Max Factor Colour Elixir gloss in Enchanting Coral.
On weekday mornings when I get ready for work I operate on auto pilot. I apply the same products in the same order every day. All the products that I use in my everyday routine are products that I purchased myself and they are the products that I trust to last all day without any need for touch ups. Thanks to blogging I am lucky enough to occasionally be sent products to try out and review. I not the biggest blog on the block so I don’t get sent loads of stuff but every now and again I do receive some great products. At the weekends is when I have time to play around with some of the other products in my stash. For this post I decided to try and do a face of the day without using any of the products that I use in my every day routine, however, I did have to use two products. They are MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Medium Plus because I don’t have a bronzer without shimmer that I could use to contour and MAC Omega because you will see in the pictures below just how important filling in my eyebrows is so I don’t like to mess with them. I have brow pencils but I find that when I fill them in with pencils or pens they end up looking very different. I am happy with the result I get from Omega and feel the colour is perfect thanks to the ash tone. So here is the look:
1 My bare, pale face (no wonder everyone tells me I look tired when they see me without any makeup)
2 Max Factor CC Colour Corrector Pencils, Green to neutralise red and Yellow for dark under eye circles
3 Pari Mineral Perfection Foundation
4 Nars Light Reflecting Setting Powder
5 MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Medium Plus to contour
6 Rimmel Mono Blush in Live Pink
7 MAC Omega to fill in brows
8 Eyes done with Pari 5 Well Eyeshadow Elements Palette (pink on lid, light brown in crease and liner) Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara for a subtle no makeup eye look.
Here I am right before getting ready for bed without having done any touch ups and I think all the products lasted pretty well.
Do you work on auto pilot in the mornings or do you vary your routine from day to day?
Some days when I have a bit of time, usually on the weekends I like to dip into my stash and use products that don’t get used all that often like these ones here:
However, during the week, when I get ready in the morning before work, I run on autopilot. I automatically reach for the same products every day. These are the tried and tested products I know and trust will last all day and beyond if needed without any need for touch ups. For some reason my handbag is heavy enough without carting around a load of makeup. The only makeup I carry with me is about two or three lip products. I seek out products that I can wear all day, all year round regardless of conditions; I want my makeup to say put through, rain, hail, humidity, sweat, in other words, everything. Here is what I reach for everyday:
Foundation: Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24 Hour
Colour Corrector for under eyes: Bobbi Brown Corrector
Concealer: either MAC Pro Longwear Concealer or Collection Lasting Perfection (not pictured)
Setting Powder: MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural in Light
Contour: MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural in Medium Plus
Blush: MAC Peachykeen
Eyebrows: MAC eye shadow in Omega
Highlighter: ELF Studio Bronzer quad (the lightest colour that’s nearly all gone)
Back in November I went out for a cycle, the weather turned on me and I ended up cycling uphill against the wind with rain and hail pelting my face. I was working so hard cycling against the wind trying to get home that I’m sure I was sweating like a beast but it was hard to tell because I drenched from the rain. My point is that my makeup looked fine when I got back and I was amazed; I was sure it would be completely gone off my face and washed down onto the collar of my jacket. Now it didn’t look freshly applied or anything but it would have been passable if need be. My hair on the other hand was a different story.
When I am doing my makeup for a special occasion or a night out I will start with MAC Prep and Prime for a primer and the blush and highlighter may be changed depending on the look I am going for but basically I use all the same products to create the perfect base, if I do say so myself.
So these are my fail safe everyday products. This list hardly ever changes, but if you have found something that lasts and lasts and you think I should try it then let me know because I’m always open to trying some new products and I am scrapping the bottom of the bottle of my foundation at the moment.
