You are probably wondering what I’m at. Only a few weeks ago I told you to be a bit more creative with your Christmas party outfit instead of buying the usual little black sparkly dress and now here I am with a post about a black dress with a bit of sparkly bling. Well I am actually proving my point. I fell in love with this dress last year and had to buy it. However, the only occasion that I felt it was appropriate for was New Year’s Eve. So this beautiful dress has sat in my wardrobe from that night till now. I figure a Christmas night out is the only other time it’s going to be appropriate. My office isn’t having a Christmas party but I am heading out for dinner and drinks with my husband this weekend to celebrate our 5th Wedding Anniversary, so this dress will finally get another outing.
The dress is by the brand Jaime La Vie and I bought it in Carraig Donn. It’s the details of this dress that make it stand out from other black dresses for me. I love the chunky jewelled neckline, which means less times wasted faffing around looking for the perfect necklace. I also like the panel down the middle with an embossed print. It adds a bit of interest and a lux effect. It’s also the perfect lady like length so that I can wear either bare legs or opaque tights. I always feel the need to wear opaque tights with shorter lengths.
Since I don’t have full on glitter ball shoes, my second choice is these green snake print shoes from Enzo Angiolini. I like these shoes along with the coincidentally matching Michael Kors clutch with black. I think they add a nice pop of colour to a black dress.
Are you rescuing any forgotten sparkly black dresses from the back of the wardrobe this weekend?
If you have been reading my little blog for a while now, it won’t have escaped your attention that mint green is one of my favourite colours.
I bought this top from Carraig Donn, the label is Pala D’Oro. It has quite a few things going on that are always going to appeal to me. The obvious being that its mint green, then you have the gold zips on the black panels at the shoulders. I don’t know why but I just like the contrast of gold hardware against black material. The shape is also one that is easy to wear in that the looseness can really hide a multitude. I would normally say that wearing baggy clothes can make you look larger but the way that this is elasticated at the waist brings it back in so it can look slimming as long as you wear it with something fitted on the bottom like skinny jeans or fitted trousers.
I paired it these trousers from Dorothy Perkins and this blazer from Penneys, You will also note the gold zips on the trousers and the blazer, it’s not an accident.
I was going to wear my green Enzo Angiolini shoes but it was raining so I went with these black ones with gold on the heels from New Look because they are more comfortable and I can walk faster in them.
The clutch is Michael Kors, I think the colour ties in nicely here but I wear this clutch even when it doesn’t match because I think it’s a classic and I love it.
The bracelet is something I picked up on holidays years ago and the earrings are also old from Penneys.
I don’t do the whole “little black dress” thing that often because I love colour and especially colour combinations. So when I do wear a black dress you can be sure it’s not going to be with black shoes and accessories. I was going to wear orange with this dress but those green snake print shoes were looking out at me, begging to be worn so green won and you know how much I love green.
I love how elegant this dress from Closet is and I have expressed my love for Closet dresses before in this post. The fitted top and flared bottom create the perfect A-line. The belt with its lovely gold hardware nips in the waist nicely. That neckline along with the little cap sleeves make me feel very Jackie O.
The green snake print shoes with their pointed toes are from Enzo Angiolini, I picked them up on the House of Fraser website during one of their brand reduction sales.
The Michael Kors clutch happens to match perfectly. It’s no accident, I got the bag first and as soon as I saw the shoes I knew they would be mine. I knew it was meant to be when I saw they were reduced.
I picked the bracelet up years ago in a market while on holiday.
The earrings are also a few years old and they are from Pulse Accessories. Pearl earrings would also look class with this dress if you were wearing nude shoes.
How do you accessorise a black dress, with bright colours, nudes, or more black?
The moment I saw this long line blouse, I had to have it. It came in a few colours but surprise, surprise I settled on this duck egg blue. If you have been following this blog you will know I am partial to anything in the duck egg blue / mint green range. Obviously after buying it, I couldn’t wait to wear it. This is how I wore it on a recent night out.
This chiffon long line and hi lo blouse is from Vero Moda. I absolutely love the beading and sequins detail on the collar and shoulders.
Because of this detail I decided not to wear a necklace, as I didn’t want anything to take away from it. I kept it simple with these earrings from Pulse Accessories. Under the chiffon blouse I wore a long line black vest top, also from Vero Moda and the leggings are from Swamp.
I didn’t wear a belt on the night because I liked the floaty feel of the look but you could easily add a belt if you wanted a little definition at the waist.
The pointed toe courts are from New Look. You’ve probably seen them in previous post and you are very likely to seen them in future ones because I am really into the pointed toe court trend at the moment.
The blazer is from boohoo.com and the clutch is a favourite of mine and its Michael Kors.
Last Saturday night was another beautiful warm night. I headed into town to meet a few friends and this is what I wore.
The black Capri jeggings are a recent purchase from Zara (of course I bought them just before the sale).
I have had this top for a long time and it is from a brand called Self Esteem (I don’t remember where I bought it). It just goes to show you that every now and then you should shop in your own wardrobe. Revisit some old items with a fresh perspective. It’s amazing how something old can look great with some new pieces.
These shoes are Enzo Aglioni and I picked them up recently in the sales. Pointed toe courts are everywhere at the moment and it looks like the trend will continue into the coming autumn and winter season. I suspect that they will be sticking around for quite a while as they look really classy with just about everything.
The necklace and earrings are from Pulse and I have had these for a few years also. When a local Pulse store closed, I stocked up on accessories during the closing down sale.
The jacket is from New Look. I tried a few different blazers with this outfit but none of them seemed right so I settled on the biker in the end. I carried the jacket around a bit as it was too warm for a faux leather biker but was glad I had it when it got a lot cooler later in the night.
The clutch is Michael Kors and has been in quite a few posts before like here, here and here
Did you ever find some old items in your wardrobe that look great with new purchases?
I have to admit that mint green is one of my favourite colours. Unfortunately, it is a pastel and pastels can look a bit out of place if it’s not sunny out. However, this top is a slightly darker shade of mint and when toned down even more with brown it works for all seasons. By contrast you could pair this top with another pastel like pink or lilac to create a really bright and sunny look.
This top is from New Look and I love the chiffon and frilly style of it. It is see through so I put a brown vest top from Pennys underneath. If you were going for a brighter look then a lighter colour vest top would work better. You could also wear this top without the belt for a feminine and floaty look, but I prefer to show that I do have a waist by wearing the cincher belt.
The D ring belt is from Pennys.
I got this necklace on a market stall while on holidays in Portugal. I like the pop of lilac next to the brown and mint.
Theses shoes are Michael Kors and you may have seen them in this previous post.
Also worth noting than you could always pop a cardi on for extra warmth, like this one from Pennys.
I am a big fan of how dusky pink looks with brown. That is why I love pairing this brown, animal print, pussy bow blouse with this dusky pink cardigan. The best part is both of these were cheep as chips as they are both from Pennys.
The jeans are from New Look. Nothing new there because if you haven’t noticed, I love New Look’s super skinny jeans. They have the perfect amount of stretch for me and they are great value.
These shoe are Michael Kors and have also been in this post. Don’t worry it was me and not Michael Kors that added the gammy heel cushions; they have a tendancy to slip off my heels, like most courts.
This necklace is Knight & Day from Carraig Donn. It’s a classic in the sense that it’s a single string of pearls, but the charm gives it a modern twist. The best bit is the charm is changeable and you can get those types of charms everywhere now.
The chiffon material of the blouse and soft pink make this a good outfit for spring, however if it is colder or raining I wear it with these boots.
These boots are Marco Tozi, and were a late January sale purchase. The delay in Spring’s arrival has meant that I’ve already gotten loads of wear out of them, although I would have preferred to put them away till next winter.
